What is traditional Chinese medicine and why does it work?
THE WHAT
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic healing system that has been practiced for thousands of years, rooted in the philosophy of balance and harmony within the body. It is based on the concept of Qi (vital energy) and the dynamic interplay of Yin and Yang, which represent opposing but complementary forces that must remain in equilibrium for optimal health. TCM includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, acupressure, cupping, moxibustion, and dietary therapy, all designed to restore the body's natural flow of Qi, support organ function, and promote overall well-being. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, TCM looks at the body as an interconnected system, addressing the root causes of imbalance to support long-term health.
THE WHY
TCM works by stimulating the body's self-healing mechanisms and enhancing its ability to adapt to stress, illness, and environmental changes. Acupuncture, for example, activates specific points along energy pathways (meridians) to regulate the nervous system, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation. Herbal medicine provides natural compounds that nourish and restore function at a deep level. Modern research supports many of TCM’s benefits, showing its effectiveness in managing pain, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, stress, and more.
